The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, commonly known as Woodstock, was a legendary music festival that took place from August 15 to August 18, 1969, in Bethel, New York.
It was one of the greatest events in music history that served as a defining moment in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. The event presented an opportunity for attendees to fully engaged in music and spread a message of unity and peace.
The three-day event presented a diverse lineup of thirty-two artists from different genres and attracted more than 400,000 attendees.
The festival was organized by four young entrepreneurs, Joel Rosenman, John Roberts, Artie Kornfeld, and Mike Lang, that brought together music and art.
The organizers had to encounter many challenges including securing a perfect venue, obtaining permits, and dealing with an unexpectedly large turnout.
This legendary event was listed as number nineteen on the list of the "50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll" by Rolling Stone magazine and also the site was registered on the list of National Register of Historic Places.

1. Richie Havens
Richie Havens, the 1969 Woodstock opener, started the concert around 5 p.m. on August 15, Friday.
The Greenwich folk singer performed eight songs including "Motherless Child" as encores. His appearance at the festival brought him into stardom as a turning point in his career.
At the Woodstock, Swami Satchidananda, a yoga guru opened the event by leading a prayer of peace and love. After that, he was known as "The Woodstock Guru".
Sweetwater, the pioneer of psychedelic rock and classical fusion style was the second band to perform at the Woodstock event.
They arrived on Friday afternoon due to a traffic jam and performed at 6:15 pm. They performed ten songs at the music event.
3. Bert Sommer
Bert Sommer, a folk singer and former member of "The Left Banke", performed around 7:15 pm, after the Sweetwater at Woodstock event.
Sommer performed ten songs at the three-day festival, including "Jennifer", "Jeanette" and others.
4. Tim Hardin
Woodstock festival lineup includes Tim Hardin, a Greenwich Village folk musician and composer. He appeared at the 1969 festival where he performed with his band.
Among the ten songs, he sang two solo songs "Misty Roses" and "If I Were a Carpenter".
5. Ravi Shankar
The prominent Bengali-Indian music genius, Ravi Shankar made his appearance in the Woodstock event in 1969.
Shankar played over 40 minutes in the rain on Friday evening at 10 pm. He was well-known for teaching "sitar" to George Harrison and his work with him made him more famous.
Melanie is a popular singer from the United States, best known for the 1970s hit song "Brand New Key".
At the Woodstock event, she gave her performance at 11 pm on Friday throughout the rain.
Later, she wrote a song "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" based on her experience at the Woodstock music festival which became her international breakthrough.
7. Arlo Guthrie

"Alice's Restaurant Massacree", an 18-minute long song, is considered his best-known work. Arlo performed at the event on Friday.
8. Joan Baez

Mountain is a hard rock band, credited for the development of heavy metal music in the 1970s. The band performed on Saturday around 9:00 pm.
They performed their fourth live gig at Woodstock Festival where they presented heavy blues rock, mainly influenced by the popular band "Cream".
17. The Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead is well-known for featuring rock, folk, blues, country, jazz, and other genres in their live gigs. They hit the stage on Saturday at 10:30 pm.
The band's performance was delayed because of heavy rain and technical issues, this took the band a little longer time than other bands.
