Newport Folk Festival is held every year at Folk Adams State Park in New Port, Rhode Island. It is an annual American folk-oriented music.

The event was started in 1959 as a counterpart to the Newport Jazz Festival. Sadly, it began to experience financial difficulties in the late 1960s.

As a result, no production was planned through the 70s. After laying dormant for well over 15 years, the event was revived in 1985.

This revival had a more profitable approach and also shifted its venue from the Newport Downtown area to Fort Adams State Park exclusively.

Now, it has become one of the most popular folk festivals in America.

Bob Dylan performance at Newport Folk Festival in 1965 is widely regarded as one of the significant moments in the history of Rock and Roll.

On July 25, 1965, Dylan took to the stage at Newport as he had done for the two previous years. But, this time he replaced his familiar acoustic guitar with a Fender Stratocaster, an electric guitar.

At the time, folk music was associated with traditional, acoustic instruments and lyrics that often conveyed political and social messages. His decision to wield an electric guitar marked a shift in the folk music scene forever.

Joined by Paul Butterflies Blues band, Dylan took to the stage at Newport Folk Festival with a Fender Stratocaster guitar on July 25, 1965, which met with a hostile reception.

The use of an electric guitar and the performance of more rock-influenced music was seen by some of the folk-purist as a betrayal of the genre and its values. Likewise, his switch from politically-charged lyrics to more personal and introspective lyrics agitated the fans even further.

His action sparked a lot of controversies and debate regarding the role and purpose of folk music in today's society.
