New Edition band members then and now still have all the founding members. The band had all current members when it started except Johnny Gill.

Ricky, Michael, and Bobby were friends since elementary school, which helped them form a connection and start a band together. After adding their other friend Ralph to the group, they started to participate in talent shows and the rest is history.

New Edition Original Members

New Edition original members are Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe. The group was initially formed by Bobby Brown.

They decided to name themselves "New Edition," in reference to the Jackson 5 as they considered themselves as a new edition of the famous five-man crew.

They are often credited with being the original version of today's boy bands. When Bobby Brown left the group in 1985, the band added Johnny Gill in 1987.

Bobby returned to the group for a year in 1996 but left again in 1997. The singer made his third comeback to the band he'd originally formed in 2005 and has been with them ever since.

Except for Brown, no other member has ever officially separated from the band. However, the band itself has gone on a hiatus twice.

All the members of the New Edition group went solo in 1990. Every member of the group found relative success as a solo act.

In such times, the three members of the group even formed a three-man musical group, Bell Biv DeVoe. Bell Biv DeVoe was named after all three of the member's surnames, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe.

As a group, Bell Biv DeVoe has seen amazing success as well. Of the four studio albums they've released, their first one, Poison went on to get 4-times platinium certification whereas, their second album, "Hootie Mack" achieved Gold certifications.

All four of their albums managed to get charted. Apart from this spinoff group, all the members also went solo and tried their hand as solo artists to varying degrees of success.

The New Edition members are currently associated with the band. The band has been active since 2002. 

Except for Bobby Brown, who came around in 2005, everyone has been with the band since it regrouped. Most recently, the six stars of the band performed at the New Year's Rockin’ Eve on the first of January.

They have also a tour planned, named "The Legacy Tour," which has been happening since the 9th of March. The tour will go on throughout April, ending on April 30 in Tampa, Florida in Amalie Arena.
