Gorillaz band members in real life are singer and producer Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett. Hewlett and Albarn formed the band in 1998.

Their friendship started after Albarn and Hewlett shared a flat together in Westbourne Grove, London.

Since its conception, the band has won a Grammy award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals in 2005 for their song "Feel Good Inc."

This single was also nominated for Record of the Year at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards. They are one of the few pioneers of the virtual band and have established a benchmark in their genre.

Damon Albarn is an English-Icelandic musician and songwriter. Prior to Gorillaz, Albarn created a band named Blur with guitarist Graham Coxon.

Blur is best remembered for their hit songs, passionate fans and strong rivalry with the band Oasis. After the band first split up in 2001, Damon dabbled his hands into making the Gorillaz which, as we know, became the best-selling virtual band of all time.

In fact, his work with Gorillaz has overshadowed Blur for younger audiences, who don't even know he was part of the Britpop band.

Jamie Hewlett is a creator, illustrator, and director. He grew up in Horsham, West Sussex. Earlier in his career, he created a comic called "Tank Girl."

Due to the comic's biggest surge of popularity, it was later adapted into a movie of the same title but it became a commercial flop and was criticized by fans.

As for his work with Gorillaz, Hewlett contributes to most of the art for the band since its formation, and has also directed some music videos.

Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn met via Blur band's lead guitarist Graham Coxon. Coxon was a fan of Hewlett's work.

Graham convinced Hewlett to take an interview of "Blur" and met Albarn there. However, Hewlett initially thought Albarn was a selfish person.

Jamie's relationship soured with Coxon after he started dating Coxon's ex-girlfriend. In a weird twist of events, Jamie's breakup with Coxon's ex led him to make share a London flat with Damon.

Getting to know each other and sharing the same living space contributed to their thoughts on building a virtual band from scratch.

Now, the two male band member's partnership has led to the release of eight studio albums, three compilation albums, and eleven EPs.
