However, the Pendergrass song isn't anything to scoff at by itself. It is a pristine example of everything that made the singer one of the icons of Soul and R&B.

Featuring his beautiful crooning voice singing to a past lover and wanting to try a chance at love again, one would need to have a heart made out of stone not to feel something, anything, when listening to this underrated classic.

Lyrically, this song talks about how there is a better life out there, but the protagonist and the listener seem unable to grasp it. No matter how much they try, they keep missing it.

Ultimately though, it is an optimistic song because the singer keeps telling the listener:

Wake up, wake upTry better next time

By the end of the song, one is hard-pressed not to bob their head along and agree.

8. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart by Wilco

Spotify Streams:17,355,299
Released on:September 18, 2001

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart by Wilco is the opening track of their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The band and that album are pioneers in indie rock.

At 6 minutes and 57 seconds, it is the second longest track on the album, and each second of that time is spent in the record's trademark dissonant style of music that sounds like drowning in a pool of whiskey.

The lyrics aren't much different either as it describes our protagonist who is a man recently broken up with walking around a city dazed, drunk, and confused. However, he keeps convincing himself his ex-lover will take him back and when she does, he will only break her heart.

Another great thing about this song is that Wilco have added snippets from the rest of the track in its outro.

7. Trying Your Luck by The Strokes

Spotify Streams:31,905,826
Released on:July 30, 2001

Trying Your Luck is the penultimate track of The Strokes' debut album Is This It? The Strokes are an American Garage Rock Revival band.

Known as the group that kicked off the Garage Rock Revival movement of the early 2000s, their debut album is seen as one of the most important records of that decade. The band themselves is seen as one of the last big rock bands.

As for the song, in classic Strokes fashion, singer Julian Casablancas talks about his relationships with women in his unique hodge-podge way, mixing in personal experiences alongside weird desires.

Though one of the more deep cuts of the album, its bouncy beat and fun lyrics have made it a fan favorite. According to Genius, the song was originally titled This Life, but they changed it along the way.

6. Give Yourself A Try by The 1975

Spotify Streams:86,441,505
Released on:May 31, 2018

Give Yourself A Try is the first single and second track from A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships. It is the band's third studio album.

The song features an interpolation of the Joy Division track Disorder and mixes lo-fi indie rock with post-punk. The lyrics see the singer Matt Healey deal with questions of aging and the lessons learned growing up.

The concept of the song is that Healy has turned 29 and is giving a sort of hap-hazard lesson to his, presumably, younger listeners about all the things he has learned. From relationships to social anxiety to questions about health, the lyrics juxtapose stern, formal lyrics with an upbeat yet janky beat.

However, the chorus of the song, which repeats the title, is an optimistic call to arms that pleads with the listener to not give up and believe in themselves.

Spotify Streams:105,559,061
Released on:November 17, 2009

Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart by Alicia Keys is the second single from her As I Am album. It is the fourth track on the album.

As the title suggests, it is a downtempo ballad reminiscent of the 1980s' power ballads. The lyrics depict the narrator trying to move on and get past a failed relationship.

However, try as she might, she can't help constantly thinking of her lover, which only leads her to fall more and more into depression. Critics lauded the song for its music, lyrics, and Keys' powerful vocal delivery.

Upon release, the song was a modest success in the States where it peaked at #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and reached all the way to #27 in the Hot 100. It was a greater success in the UK where it managed to crack into the Top 10 at #7.

Released in the 60s, Redding's version adds a more R&B element to the traditional Big Band sound of the original and became a huge success. It peaked at #4 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and even reached #25 on the Hot 100.

One of the main reasons it has become popular in the 21st century is because it was sampled heavily by Kanye West for his collaboration track and lead single Otis with Jay-Z for their 2011 album Watch the Throne.

As for its lyrical content, the song talks about the dangers of succumbing to a God complex, which caused a big furor when people started wondering if Scott was taking shots at his mentor, Kanye West.

However, the rapper clarified that he didn't have anyone particular in mind when writing the song, and meant it more as a statement to everyone in general.

Lyrically, it showcases Swift's adept and famous handling of the topic of love. The narrator or narrators in the track are all people who are trying to allay the worries of their partners by echoing that they are trying their best.

The songwriting of the track is widely lauded as many believe it is one of the best written songs on the record. Simultaneously hopeful, loving, but also with a hint of manipulation, it perfectly displays how Swift has grown as a writer.

Released on:March 30, 2018

Try Me by The Weeknd is the second track off his debut EP, My Dear Melancholy. The EP saw the singer return to the darker sound of his early work.

Lyrically, the song is reminiscent of many of the singer's tracks as it sees him trying to, or manipulating, his ex-partner to leave their current lover and return back to him. The "Try" here refers to the singer himself, and the song even utilizes some tracks from Beyonce's Drunk in Love.
