Mumford And Sons Band Members

Mumford and Sons band members include Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwane, and Ben Lovett. Winston Marshall used to be a member of the band.
A folk rock band, Mumford and Sons were formed in London in 2007 by the four members stated above. The name for the band comes from Marcus who was in charge of many of the visible aspects of the band during their early career like organizing both the band and all their performances.
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly Music Mix, the band's name alludes to an "antiquated family business name" which is a succinct way to describe their music too. Throughout the 2010s, the band became known as one of the most successful rock bands in the mainstream, and their sophomore album became the rock album to sell the fastest in the entire decade.
The band's discography is four albums deep and all of them were released between 2009 to 2018. The four albums released under the Mumford and Sons banner are:
- Sigh No More (2009)
- Babel (2012)
- Wilder Mind (2015)
- Delta (2018)

Mumford And Sons Band Members
Mumford and Son band members currently consist of three people. The members are Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwane, and Ben Lovett.
Each member of the current incarnation of the band has been present within it since its inception. The band is popular for featuring a bevy of various instruments used in the folk genre, as well as in rock and roll.
From banjos to accordions to more, Mumford and his posse have carved a new niche for themselves in popular music. The roles of Marcus and the other members of the band are as follows:
- Marcus Mumford - Lead Vocals, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, and Drums
- Ted Dwane - Backup Vocals, Bass Guitar, and Double Bass
- Ben Lovett - Backup Vocals, Keyboard, and Piano
Marcus Mumford
Mumford and Sons band member Marcus Mumford is the vocalist and frontman of the band. The singer is also the namesake of the band.
Born on January 31, 1987, the 36-year-old is the only member of the band who was born outside of the UK. The singer was actually born in Yorba Linda, California, and holds dual citizenship in both the US and the UK.
Marcus was born to Johan and Elanor Mumford, who are both English, and has an older brother called James. As a child, the singer studied at the King's College School in Wimbledon where he would meet his future bandmate, Ben.
Currently, he is married to the actress Carrey Mulligan, whom he wed on April 2012. The two were childhood pen pals who reconnected as adults, and share two beautiful children together.
Ted Dwane
Mumford and Sons band member Ted Dwane is best known for playing the bass. Aside from music, he is also a photographer.
Dwane is 38 years old and was born on August 15, 1984, in London, England. Prior to joining the band, Dwane used to be a founding member of the experimental folk-rock group, Moulettes, which is known for having a revolving door of band members.
The bassist founded Moulettes in 2012 alongside Hannah Miller, Ruth and Robert Skipper, and Oliver Austin, and played with them for much of the 2000s. However, he left the group towards the end of the decade to play with Marcus, Winston Marshall, and Laura Marling for a band they were in before Mumford and Sons.
However, Dwane has been a faithful member of the band since its inception and as stated above, plays all kinds of bass alongside guitars and drums for the band. The bassist is also an accomplished photographer and even has a photography blog on the band's official website.
Ben Lovett
Mumford and Sons band member Ben Lovett is the pianist for the band. Alongside playing music, he also produces for the band and others.
At 36 years old, Lovett was born on September 30, 1986, in London, England. As stated above, he met Marcus because they were both in school together, and met the other two members of the band while living in London.
Primarily the pianist for the band, Lovett is known to play many instruments within the framework of folksy music ranging from piano and keyboards to the accordion to guitar, drums, and percussion. The pianist also does some of the backup vocals and has even penned tracks for the band.
Aside from the band, Lovett has produced music for other bands and musicians, with his most famous production credits being on the British singer Ellie Goulding's 2010 album Lights. Other acts that Lovett has produced are:
- Gotye
- Michael Kiwanuka
- Ben Howard
- Foy Vance
Mumford And Sons Former Member
Mumford and Sons former member include Winston Marshall. Marshall played the banjo and the lead guitars for the group.
As with the other members of the group, Marshall was one of the founding members, and in fact, was even a part of the first incarnation of the band that included Laura Marling. Marshall is 35 years old and was born on December 20, 1987, in Wandsworth, London.
Marshall first met future bandmate Marcus as they were both members of the church and regularly played worship music together. Perhaps the most instrumentally gifted member of the band, Marshal knows have to play many instruments but chose to focus on the banjo so it would be easier to find session work.
The guitarist left the band due to the controversy that came about from his support of a book written by American conservative Andy Ngo who is known for his far-right beliefs. Marshall, at first, apologized for praising the book, and even said he would simply be taking a break from the band to analyze his blindspots, but then permanently left the band and retracted his apology.
Is Mumford And Sons A Christian Band?
No, Mumford and Sons are not a Christian band. Nor do they label their music such. However, the band has Christian themes in their music.
One of the main reasons why people, especially fans, sometimes believe that the band is a Christian band has to do with the fact that one member and an ex-member of the band are deeply Christian. Those two people are, of course, frontman Marcus Mumford and former guitarist Winston Marshall.
As stated above, the two met in church and would often play worship music together. That aspect of their musical upbringing carried over to the larger framework of the band's music and informed much of the music they have made throughout their career.
However, at the end of the day, the band itself has stated they are not Christian, and that too from the beginning, and according to an interview with Big Issue, the band has stated that they're fans of faith and not religion. So, calling the band a Christian band despite their refusal of the tag is plain wrong.
