Why Did A Tribe Called Quest Split?

A Tribe Called Quest split citing frustration with their label Jive Records. The group disbanded in 1998 before the release of their 5th album.

According to NPR, the prime reason behind the choice was that Q-Tip and Phife vied with each other for credit and control. The story the band itself tells surrounding their disbandment is different, stating that things simply changed too fast to comprehend.

However, all four members reunited in 2006 to help member Phife Dawg, suffering from diabetes, pay for mounting medical expenses. They toured for the next seven years until 2013.

Though 2013 was supposed to be their final year, they reunited on November 13, 2015, to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The reason why is that they were secretly planning to record a new album We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service. However, Phife passed away on March 22, 2016, succumbing to diabetes.

The remaining three members completed the album and did a final world tour in 2017 before permanently disbanding.
